Great Barrier facilities opened in time for Christmas cheer
The official opening of the new sports pavilion at the Great Barrier Island Sports and Social Club on Whangaparapara
Road will take place at 1pm on Saturday 3 December, to coincide with the annual Great Barrier Island Santa Parade.
Auckland City Major Dick Hubbard will be present to open the new addition to the community club. The new facilities
include toilets, showers, changing rooms, a small kitchen and an outdoor covered stage area for public events.
The Sports and Social Club pavilion has been developed in partnership with Auckland City, through a facility partnership
grant of $250,000 approved by the Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee.
Councillor Penny Sefuiva, chairperson of the committee, says most of the Great Barrier community will be looking forward
to the addition to the existing facilities.
"The Club is the only sports club on the island and is regularly used by local schools and the general public. It is
great that the grant has been used to improve and enhance these public facilities for the whole community to enjoy,"
says Councillor Sefuiva.
As well as being used for sporting activities, the Great Barrier Island Sports and Social Club is also utilised for a
variety of community activities such as market days, theatre productions, Music in Parks and outdoor functions such as
the annual pig hunting and snapper fishing competition.
The club will be the base for this year's Great Barrier Santa Parade, which will also be held on Saturday 3 December. An
invitation is warmly extended for everyone to join in this community event, which will celebrate the start of the
Christmas season with stalls, family fun, music and floats.
The parade kicks off at noon and will be followed by the opening of the new sports pavilion at 1pm.
