Open Day at Craft Potters
One of the oldest institutions in the Nelson craft scene has had a revamp and is about to reopen.
Craft Potters Nelson Inc was formed in 1973 by a group of amateur potters, with the aim of promoting pottery in Nelson. The group’s ‘shed’ on Ranzau Road was built in 1984. Spokesperson Leah Hogan says the shed has just had a facelift inside and out.
“You can’t miss the murals and colorful new totem poles outside, and with new shelves, a display of pots and a new coat of paint, the gallery is ready for our Grand Re-Opening on Saturday,” she said. “We’re inviting the public to check out our new look and to see work on sale by twenty of our members and guest potter Paul Laird. People will also be able to see a raku firing in progress and have a peek at the pots coming out of the gas kiln.”
Craft Potters Nelson also has a new resident potter, Alan Ballard, who used to be at Craft Habitat. He will be in residence at the shed three days a week making pottery - and ready to talk about his work to the public.
Ms Hogan said the Craft Potter’s shed was open at all times to full members, who can use all the facilities after being trained on the equipment.
“We also operate a gallery where members have the opportunity to sell their pots, once they have passed quality control,” she said. “We hold pottery classes from February through to September, and new members are expected to attend class for one year, but many members continue for many more.”
The group also has weekend schools and workshops given by potters from all round the country as well as international potters. Craft Potters is involved with the TDC’s Boredom Busters holiday program and often has local school groups and birthday parties come in for an afternoon of “playing with mud”. These activities have become so popular Ms Hogan said a waiting list might be needed.
The Craft Potters’ open day is on 19 November, 1pm to 4pm. All Welcome. No charge.
