Mayfair Place transformation complete

Auckland City is pleased to announce the completion of the last stage of the Mayfair Place upgrade in Glen Innes.

The final stage of the upgrade creates a strong visual link between Mayfair Place and Apirana Ave. A newly installed pedestrian crossing, half way between the two park and ride facilities also on Apirana Avenue, provides a safe connection from the mall to the rail station and is designed to encourage greater use of rail as a public transport option.

A final touch will see the last of three kotuku sculptures installed near Apirana Avenue early next year, completing the 'flight of the kotuku'.

As part of the project, access to and from the council-owned car park on Apirana Avenue has been changed.

People travelling north on Apirana, towards Taniwha Street, can now only turn into the car park at its southern entrance, near McDonald's. Traffic travelling south along Apirana Avenue, towards McDonald's from Taniwha Street, can turn in at either entrance, northern or southern.

Similarly, the car park exit has changed. Cars leaving the northern end of the car park, near Taniwha Street, will only be able to turn left onto Apirana Avenue, while cars exiting from the southern end will be able to turn in either direction.

Cars can now safely circulate within the car park to find a free parking space, instead of having to exit back onto Apirana Avenue and re-enter.

Signage will be installed to highlight this change in access and patrons of the car park are asked to pay particular attention at this time until they are used to the change.

The $3.7 million upgrades of Mayfair Mall, the rail station, and the extension of the park and ride facility on Apirana Avenue are part of the Glen Innes Into the future strategy.

The strategy has been developed by Auckland City in consultation with the community. It is a plan for guiding the future growth and revitalisation of Glen Innes and sets out a vision for making Glen Innes a safe and attractive place to live and work.
