Open Day for Newton Road to Western Springs Auxiliary Lane project
Transit New Zealand is holding a Public Open Day for local residents to find out more about the work on widening the
Northwestern Motorway (SH16) westbound carriageway. The Open Day will be held at the Site Office on the corner of
Central Road and Fourth Avenue, Kingsland on Saturday 5 November 2005, between 10.00am and 12.00pm. Transit
representatives and members of the project team will be on hand to discuss any queries members of the public may have
about the project.
The project provides an additional lane for the westbound carriageway of the Northwestern Motorway between the Newton
Road on-ramp and the St. Lukes off-ramp. Transit is widening the carriageway and new shoulder, for future use as a bus
priority lane during peak evening traffic. The project is part of a series designed to reduce congestion through the
Auckland Motorway network.
Landscaping will play an important part in the project and some non-native and invasive plants will be trimmed or
removed. They will be replaced with new native trees and shrubs to enhance the area between the adjoining properties and
the motorway.
Temporary safety barriers have been placed along the edge of the left hand lane of the carriageway to provide a safe
working area during construction. When the work is completed, permanent concrete barriers will be placed along the edge
of the new shoulder to improve safety and help reduce traffic noise. Construction is scheduled for completion in mid
2006.
