Council wants public input on waste plan.
Christchurch residents are being asked for feedback on possible options for dealing with the city’s household rubbish.
“Every person in Christchurch produced, either directly or indirectly, an average of 764 kg of landfilled waste last
year,” says Council’s Waste Planner, Tony Moore. “That’s more per person than in many parts of Auckland and many other
developed countries, including parts of the United States. It affects us all and all of us need to take responsibility.”
Three options for managing the city’s household waste are described in the Council’s draft waste management plan and in
the summary document:
Option 1 – a recycling wheelie bin collected fortnightly and 26 rate-funded rubbish bags (weekly collection)
Option 2 – a recycling wheelie bin and a rubbish wheelie bin, both collected fortnightly
Option 3 – a recycling wheelie bin collected fortnightly, an organics (kitchen scraps and garden waste) wheelie bin
collected weekly and householders to buy rubbish bags as they need them (weekly collection)
The Council has not made a decision yet and would like feedback from residents and other interested groups. It will
consider this along with other information in deciding on a preferred option. Submissions must be received by Friday 2
December 2005.
That preferred option will then become part of the Council’s draft long term council community plan, which itself will
be open for public comment next year.
