Council seeks feedback on New Brighton roading plans
Christchurch City Council is inviting comment on its plans to upgrade Beresford and Union Streets early next year as
part of the overall revitalisation of New Brighton.
Local residents have highlighted traffic issues along these streets and concept plans have been drawn up taking this
feedback into account.
The main aim of the Beresford St upgrade is to provide a better connection between the shopping area and car parking,
both on the street and in the free Council car parks on the south side of the street, Council project manager Jeanette
Ward said.
"The proposed changes would also make pedestrian linkages safer and more convenient; provide more landscaping
opportunities; tie in with the exit of the slow road; and remove central angle parking which hasn't proven to be very
user friendly," she said.
At the same time, a new roadway would be built for Beresford St, involving a foam bitumen recycling method that has
never before been used in Christchurch. "The old road would be lifted, churned up, strengthened with foam bitumen and
re-laid -reducing the quantity of materials used and the time involved," Ms Ward said.
Work in Union St would primarily involve replacing the old kerb and channel, landscaping, narrowing the Owles Terrace
intersection to make it safer and reconstructing the roadway (again using the recycling method).
Anyone wanting to hear more about the proposed roadworks is invited to a free sausage sizzle on Thursday 20 October,
11am-2pm, in the car park, cnr Union and Beresford Streets. The Council's project team will be available to answer
questions.
Information brochures including concept plans for work on both roads are available from the New Brighton library, Civic
Offices, Shirley Service Centre and the website www.ccc.govt.nz/haveyoursay. There are also displays in the
Burwood/Pegasus Community Board room on Union Street and at the New Brighton Library.
Submissions on the roading changes close at 5pm on Friday 28 October 2005.
