Repair and restoration for Vulcan Lane
Auckland City’s Urban Strategy and Governance Committee yesterday decided that the Vulcan Lane upgrade will focus on
repair, restoration and safety.
The committee agreed to lifting the existing pavers and undertaking drainage and other necessary infrastructure works
before relaying the same pavers and using replicas to fill the gaps.
Acting committee chairperson, Councillor Dr John Hinchcliff said the council had reached the next key stage in ensuring
Vulcan Lane is upgraded in a way that reflects what stakeholders want.
“We have listened and taken on board the feedback received from Vulcan Lane business and property owners,” said
Councillor Dr Hinchcliff.
“We acknowledge and appreciate their view that the pavers are unique and consider the decision to re-use the existing
pavers will ensure the look and feel of the lane isn’t compromised.
“The upgrade will focus on making Vulcan Lane safer for pedestrians by removing the exposed drainage channels and the
slope from the lower lane. This coupled with new lighting will result in a safer place for people day and night,” he
said.
The council will work toward a final design by the end of March 2006 with construction expected to begin in the lower
lane April-August. These dates are dependent on the Queen Street upgrade and every effort will be made to ensure that
work will not take place in Queen Street adjacent to Vulcan Lane at the same time. Construction in the upper lane is
expected to take place in January 2007.
The project is part of Auckland's CBD Into the future strategy and is funded by the CBD targeted rate.
