Kingsland plaza receives fashionable opening
A platform fashion show featuring four local fashion designers heralded the opening of Kingsland’s new pedestrian plaza
this afternoon.
Auckland City built the plaza to provide an open space for people to enjoy, and ensure safe access for pedestrians
between the Kingsland town centre and its recently upgraded rail station.
“This is part of Auckland City’s commitment to encourage greater use of passenger transport, including rail,” says
Councillor Glenda Fryer, Transport and Urban Linkages Committee deputy chairperson.
“This pedestrian plaza is one example of our investment towards achieving this vision while at the same time creating an
inviting environment for Aucklanders.”
“Kingsland is undergoing a revival and we are proud to support it as a place where there is great food, great coffee and
great shopping.”
Part of improving the area’s access is the comprehensive parking plan for Kingsland.
“Kingsland’s parking plan initially will make the most of existing parking with new time restrictions and higher levels
of enforcement.”
“Both will encourage a higher turnover of cars,” says Ms Fryer.
“In the longer term we will be exploring various options to help increase the parking available in the shopping strip.”
Kingsland’s parking plan will be implemented over the next few months.
As well as the construction of the plaza, other changes in Kingsland include:
- the relocation of the New North Road bus stop to the plaza
- a pedestrian crossing with traffic lights installed to link the plaza with the north side of New North Road
- relocation of the taxi rank
- removal of 12 car parks
- shift of the mobility parking to Central Road.
