Diwali fireworks celebrates victory over evil
Hawke’s Bay pyrotechnic expert, Te Rangi Huata is expanding his repertoire to bring a stunning new dimension to a free fireworks spectacular planned for Sunday 16 October. This show is part of the Waitakere Diwali celebrations at Trust’s Stadium in Henderson beginning at 1pm and ending at 10pm.
The festival’s organisers, the Waitakere Ethnic Board has planned the fireworks as the finale to the largest and most inclusive Diwali Festival ever celebrated in Waitakere City.
The extravaganza is choreographed to extraordinary music. Te Rangi says although he’s used music as an integral part of fireworks shows before, this is special. It is inspirational music, he says, from outstanding artists from India and New Zealand.
Ann Pala, Diwali Project Manager for WEB says the idea is to share with everyone the meaning of Diwali through fireworks, re-telling Lord Rama’s victory of good over evil as a joyous and moving journey.
Mr. Huata, who has worked as artistic director on touring shows and festivals including “Apni Dharati”, Diwali and Afro-Asian Games in Hyderabad says that “we want to create a compelling atmosphere allowing the audiences’ imagination to run wild as they look skyward at exploding fireworks amidst thundering drums, soaring orchestrations, haunting Maori putatara (trumpets) and Indian singers in full voice.”
The fireworks have been sponsored by local businessman Sachin Dutt from S & S Property Developments Ltd.
Families are welcome and encouraged to bring a rug, wear warm clothing and comfortable walking shoes. The fireworks display takes place on the Waitakere Trusts’ Stadium rugby grounds and starts at 9.30pm.
