Trees taken out to preserve public safety

Ten eucalyptus trees along Lake Rd, Northcote, will soon be cut down because they threaten public safety.
Branches are at risk of falling because of the poor structure of the trees, which are believed to be more than 40 years
old.
North Shore City parks manager, Andrew Rutledge, says the council has no option but to cut the trees down.
"We're acting in the public's interest here, and will be planting twice as many large trees in their place," he says.
"We're talking with our Birkenhead-Northcote Community Board now about what species would suit the area."
Two qualified council arborists confirmed the report that identified falling branches as a real risk.
Two eucalyptus trees, which are a feature of the area, do not pose a danger and will remain.
"We need to take a safety-first approach with this, and will be removing the trees as soon as possible, likely next
week," says Mr Rutledge.
