Wellsford Land Purchase Pointer to Progress
Councillor Grahame Powell expressed delight at the announcement this week of a purchase by Rodney District Council of a substantial landholding in Wellsford.
He says the purchase of the land now enables the council to pursue some key objectives of the adopted Wellsford Structure Plan.
The land, a 41 hectare block located just north of the Wellsford Golf Club, will be used for three main purposes-an extension to Wellsford Centennial Park, additional industrial and commercial land for Wellsford, and to take the pressure off the main highway by extending the network of collector roads.
Rodney's mayor, John Law, complimented the previous owners of the land, the Corry family, who will retain a small house block on the property. He said the Corrys had shown considerable patience and cooperation while various issues associated with the transaction were resolved.
Grahame Powell also came in for praise from the mayor, who described the councilor's involvement in the transaction as "a fine example of a councilor working on behalf of a community."
The next step will involve allocating the land according to the proposed functions, and promoting appropriate live zoning for the industrial land.
