Indian communities
and Waitakere unite for Diwali
Waitakere’s Diwali Festival promises to have something for everyone, with several ethnic associations pitching together to plan the event with the Waitakere Ethnic Board (WEB).
The Diwali event is scheduled to be held at Trusts Stadium on Sunday 16 October, 2005 from 1pm to 10.30pm.
The day will feature contemporary and traditional Indian dance items, together with other activities encompassing multiracialism and universality of mankind. The night’s function will end with a grand fireworks display on the sports field.
This afternoon and evening will also provide an opportunity for people to buy various forms of artifacts and other variety items while vegetarian Indian food of various types will be on sale.
The evening has been planned by WEB after signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Waitakere City Council last year. The board aims to bring cultures together by having as many possible ethnic communities in Waitakere represented. Cultural events such as the Race Relations Day and Diwali are a few examples of events that aim to give the public a flavour of their diverse local community.
Last year’s organiser of the big event at Trusts Stadium, Waitakere Indian Association, together with other groups such as West Auckland Indian Community, the Malaysian Community and other community groups are providing ample support, advice and feedback through their member representations on the organising committee.
The Organising Committee invites any other communities that would like to be involved to contact them now.
