Update - "Manukau City Council warns residents over crank calls"
(Media Release 25 July 05)
Manukau City Council continues to receive reports that residents are receiving calls from people posing as Council
workers conducting a telephone survey. In one instance, a resident was asked by a person claiming to be working for the
Council whether there was a male in the house and if she had a dog. Residents would understandably be alarmed by this
sort of questioning.
When Manukau City Council conducts surveys, the agencies employed to do so on its behalf will always adhere to the
following protocol:
* They will always immediately identify themselves.
* They will always explain who they are conducting the survey for and the topic of the survey.
* They will always provide a telephone number for residents to call back to verify whether the survey is a genuine
Council survey.
The Council does conduct surveys from time to time, and will be conducting surveys this week. It is therefore fitting
that residents be reminded of the above survey protocol so they can be sure that who they are dealing with on the phone
is a bonafide Council representative.
