Come and check out the city’s new Arts Centre!
Wellingtonians are invited to come and have a look around the Capital’s new Arts Centre on Saturday 30 July between 1pm
and 5pm.
The new Centre, at 61-69 Abel Smith Street, comprises 3000-square metres of space, 28 artist studios, meeting and
rehearsal rooms, community art classrooms, as well as headquarters and offices for some of the country's leading
cultural organisations and producers. The unique mixture of projects and people make the Arts Centre one of New
Zealand's most diverse and active creative environments.
The Centre was officially opened last week after two years of planning and consultation with Wellington’s creative
community. The past few months have seen hundreds of innovative people, projects, and ideas find a home in the two
buildings. Some $1 million was spent on renovations and interior refitting.
On Saturday you’ll get a chance to check out some of the 28 artists’ studios and see work in progress from film,
fashion, painting and sculpture to jewellery-making and conceptual art. Work will also be displayed throughout the
Centre.
Visit SNOWCAVE - Gabby O’Connor’s new installation in the Gallery. Learn about more than 100 courses and workshops
offered annually in the two art classrooms. Discover the regular creative activities such as gallery exhibitions,
Musical Babies, Storytellers Café, Wellington Photographic Society presentations, folk music club events and
professional development workshops.
Visit the rehearsal spaces available to producers, theatre companies, dance troupes and community groups. Join in - and
explore the artistic process. The Arts Centre has a creative spark for everyone!
