Community awards recognise strengthening communities
From intermediate school students monitoring water quality in their local stream to long-serving Meals on Wheels
volunteers, the Spreydon-Heathcote Community Service and Youth Awards helped recognise people’s work in strengthening
their communities.
Phil Clearwater, the Spreydon-Heathcote Community Board Chairman, said in presenting the awards on Thursday, 21 July,
that he was greatly impressed by the high calibre of the nominees – each of whom had strengthened the community.
“On behalf of our community, this is an opportunity for us to say, ‘Thank you’ for your generous contributions …
building the social fabric of our lives which, without people like you, could be quite empty,” Mr Clearwater said.
The Youth awards went to Charlotte Fowler of Manning Intermediate for helping to monitor the Cashmere Stream water
quality with her classmates, and Marc Matsas for his work with St John Ambulance.
Community Service Awards went to: Professor Cliff Stevenson for protecting the Port Hills; Violent Revell, as
co-ordinator of the Arthritis Society; Maree Constable, for her voluntary work in the Sydenham Residents Group;
Christine Nijdan as the former chairperson of the Cashmere High School Board of Trustees, and National Executive of the
NZ School of Trustees Association; Amosa Fa’afoi for his work as former chairman of the Hillmorton High School Board of
Trustees and president of the Hoon Hay Club; Emmet Conaglen, for his voluntary work with the St Vincent de Paul Society;
Anne Kennedy and David Bates for their voluntary work at Mount Vernon Park; Norah Robbins for her voluntary work for the
St John of God Meals on Wheels; The Princess Margaret Hospital Entertainment Group for their great patient support work
and Shirley Sinclair for her voluntary work at the hospital.
