Oriental Bay Beach Development wins first Year of the Built Environment Award
The enhancement and rejuvenation of Wellington’s Oriental Bay as a place for people in the heart of the City has been
cited as an outstanding example of built environment design and is the first recipient of a special Year of the Built
Environment Award.
The Oriental Bay enhancement which comprises an enlarged beach, new amenity building, extensive landscaping elements and
new infrastructure to retain the enlarged beach and accommodate greater public usage, combined the skills of
Architecture Workshop Limited, civil and coastal engineers, Tonkin and Taylor and the Isthmus Landscape Group.
Examiners for the Award considered the improvements at Oriental Bay provided increased amenity and access to the harbour
in a way that significantly enhanced the experience. They said a favourite place for Wellingtonians had been made better
by thoughtful and innovative design that could stand proud amongst leading examples of quality urban design and built
environment projects from around the world.
The Year of the Built Environment Awards are designed to recognise built projects that exemplify context, character,
creativity and custodianship, key themes of the overall Year of the Built Environment programme.
More Award winners will be announced each month through to November, when an overall winner will be selected at a Year
of the Built Environment Awards ceremony in Wellington.
Projects eligible for Awards evaluation may include all building types that enhance the interaction of people with
buildings or public spaces. Building work includes commercial, industrial or residential projects, restorations or
research projects and urban design projects of a civic or public nature, like spaces between buildings, plazas, bridges
and the like, which enhance the quality of the built environment for the general community.
