Michael Campbell Drive Porirua City
The Porirua City Council is to consider a proposal to rename Titahi Bay Road, to recognize the achievements of Michael Campbell.
Councillors Robert Shaw and Euon Murrel have issued a notice of motion to initiate the action. This will be debated by the Council on Tuesday 19 July 2005.
Michael Campbell is "enthusiastic" about the proposal, said Cr Shaw.
"Before I was prepared to make a move, I asked the Chief Executive to ascertain Michael's reaction.
The Chief Executive was able to work through Councillor Ken Douglas who is at St Andrews supporting Michael.
"When Ken put the idea to Michael he and his family were enthusiastic".
Cr Shaw said the idea to change the name of the road came originally from Mr H J Dietrich a Titahi Bay resident who wrote to some councillors.
"When I read the letter I liked Mr Dietrich's idea and decided to act on it".
"Michael Campbell is very much a Titahi Bay local and he is a role model for the young. He epitomizes the New Zealand virtues of hard work, determination, and humility" Cr Shaw added.
