PRESS RELEASE
“Things are looking up for the Kiwi in Northland,” said Greg Blunden, convenor of the NZ Kiwi Foundation Charitable Trust at the announcement of their involvement in this year’s Environmental Expo, to be held in Russell on Saturday and Sunday, 30 and 31 July.
“The Russell community has responded in an amazing way at the call to make this event a fundraiser for the Russell Kiwi Project."
Five years ago a fence was built at the foot of the Russell peninsula, and extensive predator control work undertaken. Although sponsorship and funding has been extensive, the ongoing commitment to enhancing the area for the protection of native birds means that costs are high.
“So it was with much delight that we heard about the special effort being made by the community to help us with fundraising."
As well as benefitting from proceeds of the door take at the Expo, the Russell Kiwi Project funds will be boosted by a silent auction at Orongo Bay Homestead of artworks contributed by local artists.
“Then the well-known wildlife photographer Geoff Moon is holding a workshop at the Expo, with advice for wannabee bird photographers, as well as exhibiting and selling his original photographs,” he said.
There are also other events in Russell that weekend which will make it a Family Festival of Fun.
Exhibitors at the Expo will be demonstrating and exhibiting environmentally-friendly products and methods over the two days of the Expo, and have also donated to the Kiwi Fund.
“We will be there as well,” Greg concluded. “We wouldn’t miss it!”
