Lions fans ride their campervans into town
Wellingtonians are being encouraged to keep their eyes peeled for campervans on the city’s highways and byways as the
British and Irish Lions fans arrive in the city in for this Saturday’s Test Match.
Mayor Kerry Prendergast, who was at the Bluebridge Ferry terminal today welcoming Lions fans to Wellington, says
campervans are a popular mode of travel for many of the British and Irish Lions fans and she is asking for locals to be
patient while the visitors adjust to our roads.
“Don’t be surprised to see a whole lot of campervans driving around the city as they arrive off the ferry. Most
campervans will be on their way to the established camping sites in Hutt City and Porirua although they will be popping
back to enjoy the festivities around the Test Match. Please respect the campervans on the roads – they won’t be here for
long.”
“The Lions supporters I met today were in great spirits and were delighted to be in Wellington after a perfect sailing
across Cook Strait. It’s going to be a great week in Wellington and I hope Wellingtonians will enjoy themselves just as
much as our visitors.”
Although the Council is encouraging campervan users to stay at camping sites around the region and use public transport
to come into Wellington city, the Mayor says that residents may see the odd campervan parked up around the city.
“We don’t normally allow campervans to park up around the city. Any campervans parking in Wellington City should pay
close attention to parking restrictions. If people need to park their campervans in the city they need to be sensible
about it and make sure there is enough space for other vehicles to get past. The Council will be working with campervan
users to ensure they don’t create a problem for locals.”
