Highland Park Kiwi Life Workshop Expands Programme
Highland Park Community House will be holding another free Kiwi Life programme for new settlers on 30 June. A special
addition to the programme will be a workshop on The Education System in New Zealand facilitated by the migrant support
team from the Ministry of Education.
Kiwilife is funded by Manukau City Council and runs for one week every month. There are 7 workshops, with the new
addition, which basically answer the many questions people have when settling into a foreign country.
For example: How do I find a job? The first workshop 'Finding a job' teaches how to write a CV tailored to requirements
of a specific job, gives techniques on getting through the interview, the type of questions likely, and some for the
interviewee to ask themselves, to get an insight into the Kiwi work environment.
Settling your family into the kiwi way of life is covered in 'Your family in New Zealand'. Such aspects as problems you
may encounter, differences, and how your can make adjustments to cope in a new cultural environment.
Unlike some other countries, where public transport is widely used, the car is a necessity for most kiwis, therefore,
'Driving Education' is an important course. Some new settlers would have been used to driving on the right hand side of
the road which presents another challenge to face. You will learn about the practical test and what is required in your
Conversion Driving Test.
'Buying a House in New Zealand' is a valuable course for those buying their own house or embarking on property
investment. A guide to understanding the market, paperwork and lawyers, real estate agents, even a component on family
trusts is included to get people on the right track.
The most recently added workshop, 'The Education System in New Zealand' informs migrants about types of schools, zoning,
examinations, expectations, absenteeism, core curriculum and the structure of our education system.
And finally 'Investing in New Zealand' will interest many immigrants. This will advise how to get a good credit rating.
What are the best investments and trends in property, the share market and business ventures.
Community House Co-Ordinator, Sandy Ryan, says, "I believe this is one of The most valuable course we run for new
settlers, and it's free! Now with the addition of the health workshop, the week's programme covers virtually everything
immigrants encounter and need help with to make integration into NZ society a more pleasurable experience. I encourage
you to phone and register on 534 5584."
