Beyond the Tunnel - stories of Lyttelton
A fascinating window into Lyttelton past and present is to be opened to the public in a collection of 12 interviews with
long-term residents in "Beyond the Tunnel - stories of Lyttelton", an exhibition to be held at Our City O-Tautahi.
The exhibition is based on historian Michelle Bradley's oral history project in which she compiled a collection of 12
engaging interviews on recollections about life in the township. She first presented her work publicly in Lyttelton in
2004 as "My Home is Lyttelton".
At "Beyond the Tunnel" visitors will be able to listen to stories about the town, port and its people, in this vivid
archive from excerpts of the original interviews, alongside photographs from the interview subjects' personal
collections. A special space for children will enable younger visitors to learn for themselves what life must have been
like as a child in Lyttelton during the 1920s, and the importance of recording memories.
The exhibition is timely during a time when the Banks Peninsula District Council and the Christchurch City Council are
heading towards amalgamation.
Admission is free to "Beyond the Tunnel - Stories of Lyttelton" from Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm, at Our City
O-Tautahi, corner of Worcester Boulevard and Oxford Terrace, 28 June to 9 July, 2005.
