Iconic Nathan Homestead Celebrates 80th Anniversary
Nathan Homestead, one of Manukau’s most treasured historic buildings, is celebrating its 80th Anniversary this year. To
mark the occasion Nathan Homestead will be featuring special artists and an Outside Art Exhibition during the
anniversary week from 20th - 27th June.
Nathan Homestead was built in 1925 for the Nathan family who owned it until 1982 when it was bought by Manukau City
Council, who used it originally for council offices.
Today the Homestead (Manurewa Community Arts Centre) is still in its original state, and with its 9 acre of lawns is a
unique setting for a dedicated art gallery, a range of art classes and all types of functions.
Renowned artist, John Ioane, will be in residence working on pieces in the Jewellery workshop at Nathan Homestead, to
commemorate the occasion.
Ioane has recently secured a public sculpture commission from Manukau City Council to create pieces for the new Manukau
Square.
A New Zealand born Samoan multi-media artist, renowned not only for his abilities as a painter and sculptor, but also
for his enigmatic installation pieces and his dynamic performances, Ioane sees performance, sculpture and sound as one
and the same.
Ioane says "I like to get people involved in the actual installation in much the same way as Polynesian culture involves
sound everyday in all its major rituals and celebrations. My sculptures frequently reflect my admiration of natural
forms and organisms found in coastal environments, specifically those in Samoa.”
He has been a finalist in the prestigious M & C Satcchi Art Awards and the recipient of two sought after Creative New Zealand grants.
Another artist to be featured during this week is Evelyn Williams a clay artist who will create an individual piece as a
commemoratory art work from the Manurewa Pottery Club. Evelyn has been involved with Club since 1982 and describes her
clay artwork as “earthy and inspired by nature.”
Nathan Homestead will also feature an Outside Art Exhibiton involving its youth community who attend art classes at the
Homestead. There will be an outdoors installation with the ‘Out of School Care and Recreation’ as well as ‘Childrens’
Art’ with tutor Natalie Hunt.
