Two New Managers For Manukau's Leisure Centres
Manukau City Council is pleased to announce the appointment of two new positions in the city's leisure centres. Gary
Burr has been appointed manager of the Lloyd Elsmore Park Leisure Centre and Waitangi Mika has been appointed manager of
the Moana-nui-a-kiwa Leisure Centre.
These staff members were previously team leaders within Manukau Leisure Services, and have over 20 years of service to
Manukau City Council between them. Over this time they have gained extensive experience in the fields of recreation and
leisure and developed strong networks in the various communities that they will serve.
Gary's employment with the Council started in 1991 as a seasonal lifeguard when he was employed for three months which
led to a full time position later that year as recreational programmer. He came with a background as a builder, with a
trade Certificate in Carpentry.
Gary says, "Since joining Council I have worked solely at Lloyd Elsmore in a number of roles including, assistant
supervisor and as a team leader, customer support and acting manager. I know the community well having lived in
Pakuranga for 25 years and one of the perks of the job is the people factor; I enjoy the contact with our many
customers.
"I am excited about taking on this new role at the superb Lloyd Elsmore Park Leisure Centre, where it is a pleasure to
come to work each day. I look forward to growing our customer base and providing ongoing excellent service to our
current customers."
Waitangi Mika's previous roles have been at the Mangere Recreation Centre as recreation programmer for four years then
team leader for about five years. He says, "I've been lucky to come through the 'ranks' where I started as a volunteer
from the then Manukau Polytechnic and was based at the Mangere Recreation Centre during my volunteer placement; my first
year was as a seasonal lifeguard at the Mangere Fun Pools. My career just developed from there."
"My new role involves managing the Moana-nui-a-kiwa Leisure Centre which consists of a fitness centre, indoor stadium
with a recreation hall & community room, and indoor and outdoor swimming pools.
"I have a passion for the Mangere community in which I have learnt about the diverse cultures within the community. Your
job is made easier when the people you are serving are friendly and can appreciate the efforts of your staff. This is
the reason why it is such a joy to come to work and to be here 10 years later, is proof of a vibrant community."
Operations manager, aquatics Michael Groom says, "This is an exciting time for the city's aquatic facilities what with
the imminent opening of The Manurewa Aquatic Centre - 'Ngaa mahi a rehia', in July. We welcome Gary and Waitangi to the
team of centre managers and look forward to their continued positive contributions to leisure in their new roles."
