Excellence award for North Shore City Council traffic engineers

North Shore City Council traffic engineers Bill Strickland and Rohan Jayawardene have won the coveted Ingenium
Excellence Award for their work resolving a problematic intersection in Birkdale.
The pair picked up the award at the 18th Annual Ingenium Conference (Association of Local Government
Engineering), held in Nelson over the weekend.
Their work to improve the intersection at Verran, Verbena and Waipa Roads was acknowledged as an innovative
proposal which met financial, traffic and local community requirements. They introduced measures to significantly
improve safety for turning traffic.
Rohan's and Bill's presentation to the conference included a self-made video illustrating the improvements to
the intersection, which had been a problem for many years.
North Shore City Council's chief executive, John Brockies, says their award not only recognises this innovative
solution but also the excellent work carried out on a local level every day by our traffic services division.
"These types of local improvement projects tend to be introduced with very little fanfare, and it is great for
our engineers to be recognised by their professional peers in this instance," says Mr Brockies.
As an added bonus, they were named runners-up for the conference's Hynds Paper of Year award.
