Community gets behind Heathcote River consultation
Work is underway to incorporate community views on the Heathcote River/Opawaho into a Christchurch City Council vision
document for the area from Colombo St to Hansen Park.
After it is finished, the vision document will be used by the Council when planning new work and maintenance along this
stretch of the Heathcote.
About 200 people turned out to public meetings and 89 made formal submissions in March and April 2005 during Council
consultation on developing the vision.
Council project manager John de Zwart said, the community’s response had been very pleasing. “We were really impressed
by the number of people that gave up their time to come to a public meeting or made the effort to make a submission.”
Analysis of submissions is likely to be finished by the end of May and the draft vision document is hoped to be ready
for public feedback later this year. The document will be made available from Council service centres and public
libraries. Workshops are also planned to give previous submitters and the general public another opportunity to have
their say.
