Suspected Hand Grenade Found In Christchurch
Heaton Street in Christchurch was closed to all traffic from 4.30pm Tuesday and a number of evacuations from residential premises in the area were made following the discovery of a suspected `hand grenade` at a building site near the Heaton Street Intermediate School.
The area was cordoned off to traffic and residents for some four hours until the item was rendered safe.
Army bomb disposal experts were called to the site, moved the grenade to a nearby school and detonated it on the playing field. All cordons are now lifted and residents were permitted to return to their homes at 8.15pm.
