Plan for cycle lanes from Takapuna to Devonport
Cycling between Devonport and Takapuna will soon be safer and more convenient, with a North Shore City Council
proposal to add cycle lanes to Lake Rd.
The council is about to begin consulting the community on the project, which includes marking cycle lanes on
both sides of Lake Rd, and adding a painted median in the centre of the road to give vehicles more room to make right
turns.
"The route between Hauraki Corner and Devonport Fire Station is a key part of the city's cycle network. These
lanes will link up with cycle lanes already proposed as part of a project to widen Lake Rd between Esmonde Rd and
Hauraki Corner," North Shore City's transport planner, Aimee Mackay, says.
"The project is part of our Strategic Cycle Plan, which aims to encourage more people to leave their cars at
home and get on their bikes, by making cycling safer and more convenient.
"It will also make it easier for drivers to see cyclists, by creating a designated space for them, and improve
the safety of Lake Rd for all road users."
The project is part of North Shore City's push to improve cycling facilities across the city. The council is
installing bike racks in suburban centres, and adding cycle lanes or paths to Esmonde Rd, Fred Thomas Dr, Hurstmere and
Kitchener Rds and Wairau/Taharoto Rd. Work has also begun work on a green cycle route, passing through the city's parks
and reserves.
Residents and businesses in the Lake Rd area will receive a consultation brochure in the next two weeks, asking
for their feedback on the proposal. People can also go to to find out about the project, and give their feedback online.
There will be a display on the project at the Devonport library during April.
"We are encouraging everyone, whether they cycle or not, to give us their views on the proposal, so we can come
up with a final design that meets everyone's needs," Aimee Mackay says. (ends)
