New immigrants express memories of other lands
Auckland City is marking this year’s International Race Relations Day by holding ‘Memories of Other Lands’ – free art workshops for new settlers at Artstation on 20 March.
The aim of the workshops is to help integrate new immigrants into the cultural life of our city, as many recent settlers have little opportunity or resources to practice their art because of lack of language, contacts and equipment.
The workshops also provide an opportunity to begin to appreciate the artistic cultures of new immigrants to Auckland, in particular the artistic traditions and vision of those from Africa, the Middle East and Asia.
The free workshops are the first step in mixing this rich source of talent into our multi-cultural society. The workshops also give immigrants the chance to display the exciting traditions they bring to their new home.
There will be a gathering on 21 March at Artstation to view the works created by the new settlers in the workshops.
Workshop information: Memories of Other Lands – Free art workshops for new settlers Where: Artstation, 1 Ponsonby Road, Newton When: Sunday 20 March 2005, 10am – 4pm
Any recent immigrant aged over 16 can apply to take part in the workshop. You don’t have to be an artist and English is not important. Contact event organiser Diane Percy on 021 111 3244 or email dianep@xtra.co.nz to register.
Artstation, Auckland City’s community visual arts facility, is located at the old police barracks at 1 Ponsonby Rd, Newton. It is easy to get to by public transport with the Link’s ‘Artstation’ bus stop right outside.
