CBD turns into Women’s World Cup cycle track
Wellington’s CBD will be transformed into a spectacular racecourse for one of the toughest races in the 2005 Women’s
World Cup Calendar on Sunday 6 March.
This is the first time the event is being held in Wellington and organisers and the City Council are keen to see the
event back in Wellington in next year.
“This is a world-class event and we are delighted to have it here in Wellington,” says Mayor Kerry Prendergast. “Because
of the hilly nature of our CBD, Wellington provides one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging uphill
circuits in the international calendar.
“More than 100 international competitors will complete 20 laps of the roller-coaster circuit – totaling 124km – in a
test of strength stamina and endurance. I encourage people to get involved in the fast-paced action on Sunday and get to
a great viewing point in one of our city streets.”
Spectators will be treated to intense racing along the course that starts at Parliament Grounds at 10am and includes
Molesworth Street, Lambton Quay, Willis Street, Boulcott Street, The Terrace, Bowen Street, Tinakori Rd, Hill Street,
Aitken Street, Mulgrave Street, Featherston Street, Whitmore Street and Panama Street.
For safety of the competitors and public, the race will take place on a circuit completely closed to traffic. Streets
will be progressively closed to traffic from 12 midnight on Saturday 5 March and reopened from 3pm on Sunday 6 March.
The Council is advising that traffic delays can be expected due to the action and alternative routes may have to be
taken.
“If you’re crossing town, it’s best to stick to the motorway or the waterfront. Please start your journeys earlier in
case of delays,” says Council Events Co-ordinator Helen Ray.
Buses will also be diverted away from the city centre. Normal bus services through the central city will be replaced by
shuttle buses running from Bunny Street – in front of the Railway Station – to Courtenay Place. Temporary bus stops will
be on Jervois and Customhouse Quays and in Wakefield St. Route 12 (Karori Park-Lyall Bay) and Route 23
(Mairangi-Southgate) will be diverted through Kelburn, the southern end of The Terrace and Ghuznee and Vivian Streets.
