Additional excavations to be opened for Browns Bay's sewer upgrade
Access to the Browns Bay Boat ramp is to change for a time to make way for a major upgrade of the local sewerage.
The existing access to the boat ramp from Bayview Rd is to be closed for about four months from late February/early
March, and a new temporary entry from Beach Front Lane will be provided. These changes will be clearly signposted.
The change is required as work is about to begin on opening up two excavated pits in the beach front area of Browns Bay
as part of North Shore City Council's Browns Bay trunk sewer upgrade project.
The pits are needed to place and retrieve the tunnelling machine currently working its way beneath the beach front
reserve, and to connect the new tunnelled sewer it is installing to the existing network.
One of the two pits is being dug part way along Beach Front Lane, in the grassed area of the park, while the second will
be on the north side of the Browns Bay Marine Centre, blocking the existing access to the boat ramp.
Two way traffic along Beach Front Lane will be maintained at all times throughout these works, however some parking
spaces will be temporarily closed.
Water Services wastewater network projects manager, Dave Woods, says the $12m project is a key part of the Project CARE
programme to reduce sewage overflows onto North Shore City's beaches. "We are replacing the smaller old sewers with
larger, 2.1m diameter sewers, which will have the capacity to provide temporary storage during wet weather and also
provide for dry weather flows from expected future growth," he says. The two pits will be required for about four
months, and once the tunnel is completed and the new sewer connected, both areas will be restored to their original
condition.
Work will then begin on a second tunnel to be constructed beneath the length of Anzac Rd.
