Hauraki Gulf islands District Plan review process underway
Initial consultation for the review of the Hauraki Gulf islands section of the District Plan is due to start within the next two months.
The Environment, Heritage and Urban Form Committee today endorsed the process and timeline proposed by Auckland City planning officers. A working party will be set up including representatives from the committee and community boards to guide and assist staff in developing the draft plan.
The review of the plan involves consulting with the community before notification of the proposed district plan to obtain feedback on the issues that the community consider that the plan should address.
Although this formal consultation phase is due to commence in April, staff will be seeking informal comment from interest groups and key stakeholders over the next few months.
“The current Hauraki Gulf islands section of the District Plan was developed over 10 years ago,” says Environment, Heritage and Urban Form Committee chair, Councillor Christine Caughey.
“The islands have changed considerably over that time, and this review which is required under the Resource Management Act, needs to take into account how things may change over the life of the plan which could potentially be until 2020.
“This is the islanders’ plan, and we want their feelings and aspirations to be reflected as much as possible in the plan content,” says Councillor Caughey. “Auckland City staff and councillors will be facilitating community participation in the plan review process and members of the community will be invited to attend development workshops.
“We appreciate that reviewing a district plan is a complex and lengthy process. Auckland City will walk community members through the plan review process and involve the community throughout the consultation,” she says.
The Environment, Heritage and Urban Form Committee are hoping to complete the review of the district plan during this term of council.
Information about the initial consultation timeline and how to be involved is available on the Auckland City website, www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/hgidistrictplan
