Free nostalgia concerts back by popular demand
After an overwhelming response from Aucklanders to the Tribute to Vera Lynn concert last year, Auckland City Music in Parks is stepping back in time with three free nostalgia concerts featuring music from the 1920s, 1940s and 1960s.
On Saturday 22 January enjoy an afternoon of top quality music from a bygone era from 2pm-4pm in the beautiful surrounds of Alberton House, Mt Albert. One of New Zealand's best-known all round entertainers, Ray Woolf, (fresh from acting in Peter Jackson’s major motion picture King Kong) will be performing renditions of some wonderful old classics which are sure to set heads nodding and toes tapping.
Three Kings Reserve in Mt Eden will play host to a tribute to both the 40s, featuring Chic Littlewood, and the 20s, featuring Brett’s New Internationals, on Saturday 12 February, from 2pm-4pm.
Chic Littlewood’s career has spanned every aspect of Show Business from stand-up comedy, singing and acting as MC/compere, to acting, script writing, TV presenting and oration. He has performed in cabaret, concerts and musical comedies along with drama, light opera, radio, television, film and public speaking. His extensive touring repertoire includes performances with Dame Vera Lynn, Rolf Harris, The Shadows, The Irish Rovers, Don McClain, John Rowles, and Gerry & The Pacemakers, and also as a star in his own right.
Solid Gold Saturday “SIXTIES ROCKZ” concludes the nostalgia series on Saturday 19 March at Tahaki Reserve, Mt Eden from 5.30pm. New Zealand rock icons Shane and the Saints will be performing hits from the 60s with special guest Scottish entertainer Celine Toner (fresh from her tour as vocalist with the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards through Australasia). An energy packed show, it includes songs from Lulu, Dusty Springfield, Cilla Black, Mamas and the Papas, Cliff Richard, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones…and of course Shane’s number one smash hit - “Saint Paul”. The show also features performances from Charlotte Johansen and Maximillionano.
Auckland City is encouraging friends, sons, daughters, grandsons and grand-daughters to make the most of this opportunity to get together and enjoy these fantastic free concerts. Pack a picnic and a deckchair and get the family and friends together for an afternoon of first class music. Check www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/mips for more details.
These concerts are just some of more than 60 free events provided by Auckland City, in association with Radioworks and are all part of the Ak@Play summer events programme.
