Today's action at Oak Park Ave - 14th January 2005
Today's action at Oak Park Ave is part of ABA and Te Aro residents campaign to halt the Wellingon inner-city Bypass.
This road breaks Land Transport Management Act laws which require air pollution impact assessment to be completed before construction. This has not happened. Wellington's precious heritage is being destroyed for perceived economic gain yet there is no significant improvement in transport time across Wellington. This project is wrong and must be stopped.
Tim Bollinger, one of those arrested, said 'Transit NZ assured us that Oak Park Ave would remain open to the public during the demolision. It was therefore a surprise that I was forced to move then arrested by Wellington Police.' Tim suffered slight injuries as police used heavy handed tactics on peaceful protestors who were at the sight to support the direct action.
Fulton Hogan and Wellington City council are warned that if they continue to destroy the heart of Wellington then they will face continued resistance.
