West Coast Rugby Football Union Gets Development Trust Support
The West Coast Development Trust is providing the West Coast Rugby Football Union with a $30,000 grant and, if required,
$70,000 in loan finance towards repair work on Greymouth’s Rugby Park.
The Football Union spends $25,000-$30,000 annually maintaining Rugby Park’s playing surface. However, unseasonally wet
weather last winter means a major overhaul of the sub-surface drainage is now required at an estimated cost of $165,000.
The Football Union is contributing significant funds but still requires assistance from other funding sources.
Work has already commenced and will be completed over the 2004-05 summer. This will ensure the West Coast Rugby Football
Union is again in a position to host a range of Shield games, Super 12 warm-up games and South Island underage
tournaments during 2005 and future years.
Announcing the funding, Development Trust chairman, Frank Dooley said the Trustees of the West Coast Development Trust
took particular note of the service provided by the West Coast Rugby Football Union to all of its members throughout the
West Coast. “We also noted the direct economic benefits of the Rugby Union being able to host tournaments and other
events, which flow to the local hospitality industry.”
