Quilt complex
Art displayed amongst an eclectic range of quilts will be on show at the Artstation Gallery from 10 – 29 January 2005.
The exhibition, My Mother Said…, is part of the 11th National Quilting Symposium which runs from 9 – 14 January 2005.
The National Quilting Symposium is a collection of exhibitions, seminars and workshops held in Auckland in January and
sponsored by Auckland City. My Mother Said… showcases quilts made outside the restrictions of traditional quilt-making
over the last 70 years. It presents an opportunity for quilt artists and quilt makers to enhance and share knowledge,
skills and inspiration by showcasing the art of quilt-making.
Organiser Andrea Best has invited a group of contemporary artists to make artwork inspired by the unusual quilts. The
quilts and the art pieces will be displayed together at Ponsonby’s Artstation Gallery so viewers can make a connection
between the works and see where the inspiration comes from.
“I call the people who made the quilts in this exhibition ‘the gypsies of the quilt world’ because they have reused old
clothes like jackets and jerseys rather than only using traditional materials,” says exhibition organiser and quilt
maker, Andrea Best.
“The artists were given a quilt each and they used it to inspire them in their own art. They have broken rules and
pushed boundaries in what is a very traditional art form. Because the quilts are made from a rich range of mostly
recycled materials, they have retained the memory of their former life. This theme of memory is explored by the invited
artists”, says Ms Best.
Ms Best will also be teaching a Family Memories Flag Workshop at Artstation from 19 – 21 January in conjunction with the
exhibition. Families will have a chance to share and depict special memories by creating their own unique family flags.

Artstation, Auckland City’s community visual arts facility, is located at the old police barracks at 1 Ponsonby Rd,
