Wellington gets set to party on New Year’s Eve
More than 8000 people are expected to celebrate New Year’s Eve at the Big Night Out in Wellington’s Civic Square on Friday 31 December.
Organised by Wellington City Council, the Big Night Out kicks off the two-month Meridian Energy Summer City festival of free outdoor events.
The evening of sparkle and outrageous colour begins at 8.30pm with Wellington’s favourite drag queen artiste – and answer to Britney Spears – Pollyfilla. Performing cabaret and sing-along numbers, the delicious diva will also lead the crowd in the popular kids’ countdown at 9pm.
The sizzling entertainment will continue with hip and happening local band, the Vipers. This legendary swing and jazz dance band will take the stage by storm with three talented vocalists, an impressive brass section and music to get people jiving.
Gearing the crowd up for the midnight countdown is That 80s Band – complete with glamtastic fashion, big hair and larger than life stage antics. Describing themselves as a ‘synthesis of everything people were back then, but wish they weren’t’, That 80s Band has thrilled crowds with their electrifying hits, synth riffs, hair, moves, make-up and guitar riffs.
“The Big Night Out is Wellington’s biggest party of the year,” says City Council Events Marketing Co-ordinator Jessica Garland. “The fun and entertainment appeals to a wide range of people – crowds of friends, young people and families come every year to Civic Square to see in the New Year in style!”
Civic Square is an alcohol-free zone. Security will be on entry points enforcing the ban.
Details about other free events in Meridian Energy Summer City can be found in the brochure, on www.feelinggreat.co.nz or by calling the Hotline on 801 3500.
