Bike the Bays – give it a go!
This summer sees the return of a popular cycling event to Wellington’s roads on Sunday 12 December. Bike the Bays is an
easy 1-2 hour family ride of 20 kilometres following the scenic coastline of the Miramar Peninsula, passing through
Shelley Bay, Worser Bay, Seatoun, Moa Point and Lyall Bay. This free event starts and finishes at Kilbirnie Park and
cyclists of all ages and abilities are welcome to take part.
Cr. Terry McDavitt, Chairperson of Greater Wellington’s Regional Land Transport Committee, says “Bike the Bays is a
non-competitive family cycle ride organised by Greater Wellington, in conjunction with Wellington City Council, to help
promote cycling as a fun, healthy and safe means of transport and recreation”.
Entry is free but to assist the organisers you can register in advance by going to Events at www.gw.govt.nz. On the day
registration will take place from 8.30am. The ride starts at 9.30am.
Riders completing the course will be eligible for spot prizes and certificates. There will also be post ride
entertainment and food stalls at Kilbirnie Park.
As the event takes place on open roads all road rules must be obeyed, especially wearing an approved cycle helmet.
The Police Youth Education Unit will be present, offering cycling skills courses for children before and after the ride.
For safety reasons under-14’s doing the ride must be accompanied by an adult aged 18 years or older (1 adult to 3
children).
