Last chance for unregistered dogs
North Shore City dog owners have one last chance to register their pets - or face fines of $300 or more.
The council has written to 1,300 dog owners around the city, reminding them of their obligations.
"These are owners who registered their dogs last year, but have yet to do so this year," says North Shore City
environmental team leader, Warwick Robertson.
Every dog over the age of three months must be registered every year. Costs range from $70 to $110. Making sure dogs are
registered is in the owner's interest, he says.
"Among other things, it ensures the dog can be identified if found straying, and entitles the owner to free dog
obedience classes."
Registration expires on July 1, but offending owners are being given the chance to renew registration through to next
July, without penalty, if they pay within 14 days of notification.
Under the Dog Control Act, fines of up to $1,500 can be imposed on owners with unregistered dogs, says Mr Robertson.
Dog owners can also make substantial savings (of up to 50 per cent) by registering their pets early, and in full. They
can also qualify for a discount by becoming a 'responsible dog owner', which entails completing a course run by North
Shore Dog Control.
