New Southern Motorway lanes open this week
Transit New Zealand is pleased to announce that from Monday 1 November, new south and northbound lanes will be available on the Southern Motorway. The new lanes will improve motorway capacity and have been delivered as part of Stage 1 of the Central Motorway (Spaghetti) Junction upgrading project.
>From Tuesday (weather permitting), there will be:
. An additional lane northbound motorway lane between Gillies Avenue and Khyber Pass Road
. An additional southbound motorway lane between Khyber Pass Road and Gillies Avenue
. An additional southbound lane along the Gillies Ave Off-ramp
Also, the Grafton Road on-ramp has been improved by a new lane that extends the area available for merging.
The entire length of SH1 from Upper Queen Street to Gilles Avenue will now be resurfaced to provide motorists with an improved driving surface.
Ongoing night closures until January 2005 will enable this resurfacing to be completed safely.
Northbound lane and on-ramp changes are now in place. Southbound lane changes are planned for 6am on Tuesday 2 November and Wednesday 3 November. Wet weather will postpone changes until the next clear morning.
For more information, visit the project information centre at the corner of Stanley Street and Alten Road, telephone 0800 to Freeflow (0800 863 733) or visit the project website at http://cmi.transit.govt.nz/
