Central Motorway Junction Project Opens to the Public,

Transit New Zealand’s Central Motorway Junction upgrading project (Stage 2) is holding a public Open Day on Saturday 9
October between 10.00am and 12.00pm. This will include a guided tour of the work currently underway in ‘Spaghetti
Junction’ – New Zealand’s busiest section of motorway with 200,000 vehicles passing through it every day.
Construction work started on Stage 2 of the Central Motorway Junction upgrade in February. This covers the core of the
motorway junction which includes the area between Wellington Street and Symonds Street on the Southern Motorway and
between Symonds Street and Bond Street on the Northwestern Motorway.
Providing four new motorway-to-motorway connections, additional lanes and upgraded safety measures through a restricted
corridor - during ‘live’ traffic conditions - has proved challenging to the design and construction teams. These
challenges to the design and construction, and the way in which the traffic management teams are keeping this busy
intersection operational while completing the upgrade, will be explained at the Open Day.
On the day, visitors will also be given the rare opportunity to walk behind the safety barriers and over parts of the
site to see the actual work under construction. Visitors are therefore requested to wear sturdy shoes. Safety vests and
a safety briefing will be provided. For safety reasons, children under 12 will not be able to join the full guided
tours.
There is an information centre on site which has a raft of information about the construction project, including its
aims and objectives, and how it fits in with Transit’s overall plans for improving the Auckland region’s motorway and
state highway network. Posters, drawings and maps of how the junction will look and function on project completion are
also on display, as well as details of the construction programme over the next few years. A project representative is
on hand to answer any questions.
Transit Project Manager, Colin Holtshousen, says a large number of people have already visited the Information Centre at
13 – 19 Howe Street, Newton. “We have had a lot of positive feedback about how useful the centre has been and we are
looking forward to meeting new visitors to the Open Day on Saturday,” he says.
