Makaawhio receives contribution from Development Trust
The West Coast Development Trust has approved a $24,000 grant to Te Runanga o Makaawhio to assist in the completion of
carving for their Marae facility at Mahitahi Bruce Bay.
The funds are a contribution to the overall project to build a fully functioning marae complex, which will provide
cultural, economic and employment opportunities. Makaawhio also intend to investigate and develop business
opportunities, which are expected to employ several permanent and part time staff.
The Development Trust grant will fund the construction of exterior carvings to adorn the wharenui, the first carvings
seen as visitors are welcomed on to the marae.
“The marae will provide considerable tourism and educational benefits to the West Coast and especially South Westland”
says Frank Dooley, Chairman of The Development Trust. “We do not under-estimate the importance of the symbolism of the
carvings and of an association through this project that strengthens our relationship with our local hapu and
contributes to Makaawhio’s sustainable development.”
