PRESS RELEASE
LIBERTARIANZ
AUCKLAND MAYORAL RACE
Libertarianz challenger for John Banks
"I will fight for the freedom of Aucklanders, for lower rates and for less council interference in people's lives" declared Libertarianz Deputy Leader Stephen Berry today as he announced his candidacy for the Auckland Mayoralty.
"I see two real choices for ratepayers at this election," says Berry. "Four different variants of Nanny State ... or me! All of the other contenders believe in increasing what the Auckland City Council does," he explains. "By contrast, I believe the council should instead and as a matter of urgency begin extricating itself from owning, meddling and interfering in businesses, and it should butt out of people's lives."
Asked to clarify his slating of his electoral opponents as all Nanny-Staters, Berry says "on the one hand - the right hand - you have Mayor Banks wanting to persecute the commercial sex industry and regulate signs showing sexy people; meanwhile he wants to use ratepayers money pursuing grandious projects like the V8 supercar race and Eastern Corridor.
"On the other hand," he waves his left hand in the air, "you have the vapid Christine Fletcher, the supine Bruce Hucker and Helen-Clark-toadie Dick Hubbard all wanting more rates spent on more and more meddling in people's lives."
It's time Auckland ratepeyers were offered a real choice, says Berry. "I am that choice!"
"I say - cut Council in half; give Aucklanders back their rates-money to spend on what they themselves choose; stop obstructing peaceful businesses and instead let them get on making money, employing people and adding to the vibrancy of this great city. In short, get the hell out of peoples' way!"
At just twenty-three Berry is aware he is amongst the youngest ever to stand for the Mayoralty, and he says he brings a voice to young people "who know Councillors are generally a bunch of immature, undeveloped egos looking to bolster their own inadequacies and power complexes."
"I look forward to vigorously debating the virtues of small council against the big council Mayoral candidates" he concluded.
