Flash, new landscape for Cobham Drive foreshore
The southern foreshore in Evans Bay is getting a welcome face-lift, thanks to Wellington City Council’s four-year
project to revitalise the area.
City Council’s Project Manager Peter Hemsley says work has already been completed on relocating the drainage outfall to
divert the stormwater main near the Cobham Drive-Troy Street roundabout, and from Thursday 19 August work will begin on
filling the hole separating the two beaches.
“This will help create a larger formalised carpark and improve access to the beach. For safety reasons a new entrance
has been constructed 100 metres east of the existing one.”
Hours of work will be from 9am to 5pm during the week, with some Saturday work as required. This work will be completed
by the end of September.
“This upgrade will help to make the area more attractive with extensive planting, and also aims to protect the foreshore
from erosion,” says Mr Hemsley.
“The 1.3km stretch along Cobham Drive is regularly used by pedestrians and cyclists, but currently ignored by commuters
to and from Wellington’s airport. The extensive landscaping we’re doing will change that.”
Later this year, Tower of Light - another of the series of Meridian Energy sculptures - is expected to be installed in
the area on the approaches to the airport.
