Christchurch Council seeks developer for prime beachfront site
Christchurch City Council is seeking commercial operators or developers interested in helping redevelop the beachfront
around the New Brighton Pier in the city’s east.
The New Brighton Beach Park development takes in a 600m strip of land between the beach and Marine Parade, about 2.2ha
of true beachfront property zoned Business 2 in the Proposed Christchurch City Plan.
In this first phase, commercial operators and developers are being asked for ideas about how a portion of that land
could be used for key anchor activities.
“We’ve made a deliberate decision not to say which part of the strip we want developed or to be very specific about what
we’re looking for,” says project manager Kevin Mara. “We want people to let us know how they think different parts of it
could be used and how those schemes would contribute to the general energising of the area.
“This is probably the last available piece of true waterfront in the city that has a commercial zoning, so it’s a prime
opportunity. We want to consider the whole range of ideas that might be out there and be able to look at how those ideas
would contribute to our over-all goals for the suburb.”
The Beach Park development is part of a wider revitalisation of the suburb’s commercial and entertainment hub, centred
on the Seaview Road mall and pier.
