Creative spaces going places in Onehunga
Onehunga is really going places creatively as it prepares for the unveiling of the community centre’s new mosaic mural
next Thursday, 19 August.
The mural is the third piece of the five-part puzzle to integrate artworks into Onehunga’s new community facilities. The
artworks have all been specially designed with community involvement to reflect the rapidly growing and culturally
diverse suburb.
The tiled mosaic mural is a collaboration between two local Onehunga groups - ARTPAD, an artists collective, and
Auckland Studio Potters (ASP). Ceramicist Tom Barter was in charge of tile production and installation with concept
design by local artist Rhonda Jameson.
Everyone is invited to the unveiling, which will take place at: Time: 4pm Date: Thursday, 19 August 2004
Where: Onehunga Community Centre, 83 Church Street, Onehunga.
The unveiling comes hot on the heels of the recent announcement that Auckland City’s Onehunga Community Centre and
Library had won Creative New Zealand’s prestigious “Celebrating Cultural Diversity” award.
The award recognises the efforts of Auckland City and the Onehunga community to integrate arts into its local hub,
Auckland City’s Onehunga Community Centre and Library.
The other two projects completed since the Community Centre and Library complex was opened in February last year are: a
sculpture called Hautaha or "coming together" by Tongan artist Filipe Tohi a community youth mural which was a
collaboration between local schools Penrose High, Onehunga High and Martin Hautas and project artists Charlotte Graham,
Nanette Lela'ulu and Manu Scott.
The fourth art project for the facility, an artwork in the foyer, will be under way soon.
