Socks to take the city by storm!
The countdown to the start of Wellington City Council’s award-winning Dance Your Socks Off! festival has begun. The
month-long party kicks off with a free four-hour dance showcase at Courtenay Central from 5pm to 9pm on Wednesday 1
September. Dance Your Socks Off! provides something for everyone with an interest in dance.
This year’s festival includes 10 free performances including Brazilian group Sambalicious, contemporary street dance
Roll Again Baby! and a chance to see the Royal New Zealand Ballet dancers rehearsing at the RNZB open day.
Why not participate in one of the 12 free classes? Have a go at Capoeira - the latest dance form taking Australia by
storm. It’s described as “part way between a dance, a martial art and a culture of the people”. Other free classes
include tango, swing, rock ‘n’ roll, folk and hip-hop.
The Dance Your Socks Off! Season at Bats includes Massif, described as “intrepid dance theatre inspired by the fearless
madness of those who climb mountains. Thrills, chills and skills combine in devised tomfoolery.”
The diversity of opportunity is not matched in any other dance festival in New Zealand.
Highlights include Cirque de Sock - stilt performers presenting a tall tale of mismatched pairs, a contemporary South
African dance workshop and retro funk and wheels at the Roller Disco.
Full details of all events and workshops are available in the free Pink and Blue Dance Your Socks Off! – Feeling Great
brochure, available at pools, recreation centres, libraries and other points around the city, online at
