Southern Motorway southbound: lane changes now in place
Transit New Zealand advises all motorists that layout changes are now in place to southbound lanes of the Southern
Motorway (SH1) between the Symonds Street and Grafton Road on-ramps.
Lanes have shifted east towards the shoulder onto a new section of carriageway to enable bridge widening as part of
Stage 1 of the Central Motorway Junction upgrade project.
Lane widths will stay the same and there will be no changes to the function of the lanes. Access from on-ramps will not
be affected.
Warning signs will be in place to alert motorists of the change ahead while they adjust to the new alignment.
Motorists are advised to drive with caution, and be aware that there may be delays.
The CMJ Project Stage 1 of Transit’s Central Motorway Junction upgrade project covers the section of motorway between
the Upper Queen St overbridge and Gillies Ave on- and off-ramps and is scheduled for completion in 2005.

Stage 2 of Transit’s Central Motorway Junction upgrade project extends from Bond St on the Northwestern Motorway (SH16)
to the interface with CMJ Stage 1 near Symonds St and from Wellington St on the Southern Motorway (SH1) to Symonds St.
