A thousand native trees to be given away
Greater Wellington Regional Council, in association with TV ONE, will give away 1000 native trees next Wednesday, 7
July.
The giveaway will take place at Civic Square, Wellington, from 12.30pm. Greater Wellington wants to encourage
Wellingtonians to plant more natives and to value native trees.
“Home gardeners can give nature a hand by planting native trees and shrubs in the city and suburbs. Native trees provide
homes for birds and help build an ecological corridor between larger bush areas,” says Greater Wellington biodiversity
co-ordinator Tim Porteous.
Winter is a good time to plant trees, allowing them to get established before spring growth. There are six different
species of eco-sourced (from the Wellington Region) plants to be given away. People can collect one plant each, on a
first-come, first-served basis.
“These are all plants that are well adapted to the local environment, they will grow well and look great in any garden.
They will also attract native birds such as tui and fantails,” Tim says.
The plants will come in a cotton bag, and include information on how to plant and care for your tree. Greater Wellington
staff will be on hand to give advice.
