Auckland City thinks Whenuapai will fly
Auckland City Council today announced its support for further investigations into the use of the current Whenuapai
Airbase as a commercial airport.
Council’s Strategy and Governance Committee supported the Auckland Regional Growth Forum’s resolution to proceed with
investigations into the development of Whenuapai Airbase as a commercial airport.
“This is an excellent opportunity to make the most of the strategically situated infrastructure already at Whenuapai
Airbase to benefit the Auckland region,” said Councillor Mark Donnelly, chairperson of council’s Strategy and Governance
committee.
“We believe that the proposed airport at Whenuapai will encourage tourism industry growth because of increased
competition and the opportunity to market Auckland differently as a destination,” he said.
The site has geographical advantages to enhance the speed and efficiency of transport for business travellers to
Auckland’s central business district. Auckland City is also supporting the use of Whenuapai Airport’s Civil Defense
capability.
“Auckland City Council works closely with other authorities regionally and nationally to manage Civil Defense and
emergency strategies,” said Mr Donnelly.
Today’s resolutions will be communicated to the Auckland Regional Growth forum.
