Winter Swim - cool contribution to charity appeal
Auckland City is issuing a challenge to all Aucklanders to “brave the cold” at the Winter Swim on Sunday 4 July to help
those in need.
Sarah Fairhead, Auckland City event organiser, says: “There has been a lot of coverage on the plight of the homeless in
our community in recent weeks. This event, which directly benefits the Auckland City Mission’s Winter Appeal, is a fun
and practical way all of us can show that Auckland is a city with heart. It’s open to anyone and everyone – young and
old, mums and dads, friends, workmates, celebrities, and media.
“Auckland City is really behind this – we have a number of staff already entered. You can make a difference in the life
of someone else. This is your chance – get involved and let’s showcase the generosity that we’re famous for ”, says Ms
Fairhead.
There are a number of ways you can lend your support to the appeal: bring your kids along to the Bell Tea Beach Dig at
10am brave the icy waters for the Swim (no entry fee) at 10.15am get a team together for the Wacky Kayak relay race ($20
registration fee) at 10.20am bring along a can of food to donate or simply make a gold coin donation.
Diane Robertson, from Auckland City Mission, says that food parcel demand is at a three year high, indicating that their
homeless family clients are in crisis right now.
“Events like this are great fun and make it possible for us to address these very serious issues that confront our
clients during winter. Issues like keeping warm and dry and having enough money to buy food and keep up with increased
bills", says Ms Robertson.
To register for the Swim or the Wacky Kayak Race before the day call (09) 370 2020, or you can register at 9.30am on the
day.
